A mommy makeover combines multiple surgical procedures to address common issues women have after delivering a baby. During the pregnancy, the breast tissue begins to stretch due to milk production. After delivery, hormone fluctuations and breastfeeding can cause the breasts to deflate and sag. An augmentation involves inserting silicone or saline implants to improve the fullness, size, and even symmetry of the breasts. A breast lift is for those who want a mommy makeover to improve their natural breasts by repositioning— not removing— the tissue, areola, and nipple to be in a more desirable location.
Some women find it difficult to lose fat after a pregnancy. This can largely be due to fluctuating hormones. Therefore, women want to add liposuction into their mommy makeover, which is a noninvasive procedure. However, liposuction is not considered a weight loss procedure. Patients may lose a small amount, but it is mainly to contour a specific area with stubborn fat deposits.
Liposuction involves the surgeon creating a few small incisions around the targeted area (back, arms, upper or lower stomach, etc). Fortunately, these incisions usually heal to the point of going undetected by the naked eye. They will then use suction technology to remove the fat deposits before applying stitches, sometimes dissolvable, or wrapping the specific body area.
During an approximate nine-month pregnancy, though sometimes shorter, large amounts of weight gain are normal and expected. However, because it happens rapidly and in a short amount of time, the uterus presses against the connective tissue that runs down the abdominal muscles, called libea alba. This expansion causes the stomach to have more girth or bulk that will not dissipate with diet and exercise. Therefore, the majority of women who choose to undergo a mommy makeover will include this procedure in their plan.
A tummy tuck or abdominoplasty involves removing fatty tissue and skin from above the abdominal muscles. To do this, the surgeon must make an incision just above the pubic hairline, which will later heal but may present as a light scar. To finish, they will reposition the navel and use stitches or staples to pull the remaining skin together.
No matter if one has a vaginal birth or C-section, changes to the vagina can occur. For vaginal births, the vagina stretches and reverts closely back to its original size and shape over time; however, there can still be functional issues and the widening of the canal. For those who have C-sections, hormonal fluctuations can cause functionality issues as well. Therefore, vaginal rejuvenation targets specific areas of the vagina that are causing issues. This may involve narrowing the vaginal canal, reducing the clitoral hood, and restoring surrounding soft tissue structures that may be causing discomfort.
